Jackie and Scottie’s Miami Wedding | Fort Lauderdale Wedding Photographers

“Imagine fighting an enemy far worse than anything you have ever faced before, an enemy so brutal and corrupt, whose sole purpose is to seize control of your life. This enemy repeatedly strikes below the belt and is merciless in its attempts to destroy you. Imagine fighting a battle against all odds, on the brink of death, only to survive another day to tell the tale. In actuality, this battle I have led you to imagine is the true story of my life. My life was drastically changed when I was just eight years old and diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer known as Ependymoma. It has been a long journey; countless surgeries, radiation treatment, and years of chemotherapy.”

Better Half Weddings, stepped in to help make their dream wedding come true! Shelley, as well as many other south Florida wedding vendors, helped to donate a very special wedding to a very special couple.

When Shelley asked us to be involved in this sweet couples big day, we were so excited and honored to be asked to help. Soon after the announcement, wedding plans began to take place! We received an overwhelming response with people wanting to donate their services and also donations for the couple’s dream venue! It was so exciting to see all of the plans fall into place! Colors were picked, florals were designed, the date was set and invites were sent! We even had time to sneak in an engagement session for the deserving couple!

In the midst of wedding planning, Scottie was chosen to become the first patient in the United States to participate in a clinical vaccine trial that would be an opportunity for a cure of his cancer. How exciting! He continues to participate in the study in hopes of finding a cure for himself and for others going through the same thing.

As the wedding got closer, Scottie’s health worsened and he was placed in the Miami Children’s Hospital, the same hospital that he has been treated at since he was young. The wedding was still two months away, so wedding preparation continued. No matter what, their love would be solidified in marriage on their wedding day!

Just a week before the wedding, Scottie was still at the Miami Children’s Hospital, so Jackie and Shelley made last minute preparations to have the wedding held at the hospital. There may have been a change in venue and details, but everyone was still over the moon excited to witness Jackie and Scottie profess their love to one another. Friends and family flew in from all over the country to be there to support them in the best day of their lives.

Even though the wedding was in a very untraditional venue, we still wanted Jackie and Scottie to feel as though they were able to have all the wonderful traditions of a wedding. The nurses were kind enough to open up their private offices for Jackie and her girls to get ready in. In the office, Jackie and her girls were primped and pampered while sipping on mimosas. There was lots of laughter and a few tears.

In the middle of the hospital scenery, I was able to find a few locations that were perfect for her wedding details. Her dress was hung perfectly on a palm tree, while her wedding shoes were placed on a fun colored table for families to enjoy the outdoors, while visiting the hospital.

When it was time for Jackie to put on her wedding dress, everyone gathered into an exam room to watch her turn into a bride. She was simply stunning. Her earrings completed the look perfectly.

With her gorgeous bouquet in her hand and her dad by her side, Jackie was walked down the hospital hallway that made for the perfect wedding aisle. As she walked into Scottie’s hospital room, you could hear her family and friends gasp at how gorgeous she looked. Even more important was the look on Scottie’s face. Even though he was unable to tell her that she was beautiful, you could see it in his eyes.

As Jackie held on tight to Scottie’s hand, the wedding party played “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher…their song. Everyone started singing along and it was the most magical moment. This is hands down the most emotional and heart warming wedding that I’ve ever photographed. It was so hard for me to stay composed and not to cry along with everyone else.

In-between precious looks and kisses shared, Scottie showed off his new wedding ring. He’s surely a proud married man!

Because the reception and dance were no longer able to take place, family gathered in Scottie’s room after the ceremony to eat some delicious cake!

We also wanted to make sure that the couple was able to have the traditional wedding photos of their day. We made sure to take some time to photograph the bridal party, Jackie with her girls and also Jackie by herself. She made such a beautiful bride, Scottie’s a lucky guy!

Not only is Scottie a brain cancer survivor; he’s also a motivational speaker, published author, brother, friend and fighter. We really hope that his story inspires others to push through their troubles. We also hope that Scottie and Jackie’s love story inspires other couples to know that true and unconditional love can survive through anything. Congratulations on your wedding and marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Scottie McNeil! May you have many, many more happy years together filled with love and faith.
